Hotel Densmore was advertised in Leelanau County newspapers by the late 1890s and early 1900s, with E. F. Densmore listed as proprietor. Maple City itself began in the 1860s as “Peg Town,” named for a wooden shoe-peg factory that used local maple timber. After that, sawmills and other wood-product businesses helped keep the village busy.
