The Surprising History of Charlevoix Michigan

Charlevoix, Michigan, is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, known for its picturesque landscapes on Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. The city had a population of just under 2,500 people. The city’s history dates back to the mid-19th century, and it is named after Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a French explorer who traveled the Great Lakes, although he never visited the area that now bears his name.

The Odawa people were the original inhabitants of the region. European settlers didn’t begin to inhabit the area until the mid-19th century. The town’s location on the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix made it an attractive place for these settlers.

The town was first platted in 1871 by Archibald Buttars, who is considered the founder of Charlevoix. Around this time, the lumber industry was important for the town’s economy, with sawmills processing the area’s ample timber resources. The town also served as a port for steamships traveling on Lake Michigan.

In the early 20th century, Charlevoix’s economy transitioned from lumber to tourism. Its natural beauty, especially its lakes, beaches, and recreational fishing, drew visitors from afar. In addition to its natural attractions, the town also has a number of architectural points of interest. Notably, a group of “Earl Young houses,” built in the first half of the 20th century, have a unique “hobbit” style and are made with local stone.

Today, Charlevoix remains a popular tourist destination. It’s known for its vibrant downtown, outdoor recreational activities, and annual events like the Venetian Festival. Please note that this information is accurate up to my last training data in September 2021, and I recommend checking the most recent sources for updates.
