The First Electric Streetcar in Leslie Michigan – November 1909

Early Electric Streetcar In Leslie Michigan Surrounded By Residents During Its First Run In 1909.

A big electric interurban car — No. 499 — sits on the tracks in this Leslie street scene, as a crowd gathers nearby. The handwritten note on the image dates it to Nov. 4, 1909, right when the Jackson-to-Lansing interurban line was being built and began running through town (including some street-running in Leslie).

For a few decades, cars like this helped connect small communities to bigger job centers — long before most families owned a dependable automobile.

Do you have family stories, stops, or memories tied to the interurban era around Leslie?
