On Watch At the Lakeland Michigan Depot c1900

Black-And-White Winter Photo Of The Lakeland Depot Area With Curving Railroad Tracks, A Tall Tower With A Man In The Doorway, And A Nearby Building Labeled “Post Office.”

A lone rail worker stands in the doorway of a tall control tower as tracks curve past the Lakeland depot and a post office just steps from the rails in this winter scene (c. 1900, not confirmed).

This spot was known as Lakeland Junction — an interlocked crossing where the Ann Arbor Railroad and the Grand Trunk Western met near Zukey Lake. Before cars took over, Lakeland was promoted as a resort stop, with trains bringing summer crowds to the water.

And that “POST OFFICE” sign? Railroad histories note the post office operated in a building right by the tower and depot — convenient when mail and passengers arrived by train.

What do you know about Lakeland’s depot days — or the post office by the tracks?
