Black-And-White Photo Of A Large Two-Story Inn On A Hillside With Long Wraparound Porches And A Sign Reading “Deer Lake Inn,” Labeled “Clarkston, Mich.”
Historic black-and-white photo of the Deer Lake Inn in Clarkston, Michigan (Oakland County), showing a large early-20th-century resort/hotel on a grassy hill with wide wraparound porches and multiple dormer windows. The image is dated 1923 (user-supplied). Clarkston-area historical records credit the Barry siblings (Nell, Mae and William) with opening the Deer Lake Inn on July 3, 1912, operating it for 15 years, and selling it in 1925, reflecting the area’s rail-and-lake tourism boom. A Clarkston Historical Society newsletter describes the heavy tourist traffic tied to the Inn and other resorts during peak seasons.

DEER LAKE INN, CLARKSTON, MICH. — Dated Sept. 4, 1922, this photo shows the big Deer Lake Inn perched above Deer Lake, with its wide porches ready for summer guests.

Local histories describe the inn as one of the area’s popular resorts in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when visitors arrived by train — and later by car on Dixie Highway. Guests came for boating, fishing, and time at the lake.
