In this rare 1886 photograph, the two-masted schooner Florida appears to sag into Lake Superior off Marquette after a November blizzard drove her against the city docks. Built at Oswego, New York, in 1868, she hauled cargo on the upper Great Lakes. One crew member died in the grounding, a reminder of how quickly Superior’s weather can turn deadly. Today, the remains rest in 10 to 15 feet of water within the Marquette Underwater Preserve, a 24-mile protected stretch of shoreline and harbor.
