Gaylord Train Pulls Into the Station at Boyne City Michigan 1905

A steam locomotive and passenger cars — labeled the “Gaylord train” — sit at Boyne City, Michigan, in a postcard dated May 1905.

That timing matters. In 1905, the Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena Railroad Company was incorporated, backed by White family lumber interests that built rails out of Boyne City to reach timber in Northern Michigan. The line would connect with the Michigan Central at Gaylord later that year.

Zoom in on the tender marked “11,” the wood-sided coaches, and the unpaved street running alongside the track — a snapshot of rail travel in the logging era.

What do you know about Boyne City’s depot and this “Gaylord” run?
