The location written on the photograph is clear, but exactly which road near White Lake is pictured has not been confirmed. The scene fits an important period in Michigan transportation history: By 1913, rapidly growing automobile use was pushing the state and local governments to improve roads, and Michigan adopted additional motor-vehicle taxes for highway work in 1913 and 1915.
