Pinconning Depot and Elevator About 1910

Railroad Tracks Curve Past A Depot And Freight Cars, With Storefronts, An Early Automobile And Utility Poles Along The Street At Left.

Pinconning Depot and Elevator, About 1910

Pinconning’s depot stands beside railroad tracks, freight cars and nearby businesses in this photograph dated approximately 1910. An early automobile shares the scene with railroad signals and a restaurant sign.

Railroads helped Pinconning grow from a lumber settlement established in 1872 into a commercial center. Michigan Central and Detroit & Mackinac both served the community, with separate depots about a quarter-mile apart.

Look closely at how the storefronts, station and tracks fit together. Rail transportation was part of the town’s everyday business, with shops and services close to the depot.
