New Cars On Parade – July 4, 1911- Shelby Michigan

A Crowded 1911 Downtown Parade Scene In Shelby, Michigan, With Early Automobiles And A Horse-Drawn Team On A Wide Dirt Street And Spectators Lining Both Sidewalks.

New cars rolled down Shelby’s main street on July 4, 1911 — and the whole town turned out to watch. In this parade scene, early automobiles share the dusty road with a horse-drawn team, while crowds pack both sidewalks under summer umbrellas. A “HOTEL” sign rises over the storefronts, and “MARKET” is visible on an awning at right.

The handwritten caption reads “July 4 ’11, Shelby, Mich.” and there’s a small circled “E” mark at the bottom that may match the signature used by Shelby postcard photographer Harlo M. Elliott, who documented Oceana County life in the early 1900s.

Do you recognize the block, the hotel, or any family stories tied to Shelby’s Fourth of July celebrations?
