Welcome Arch at the City of Munising Michigan c1910

Black-And-White Photo Of A Downtown Street In Munising, Michigan, With A Large “Welcome” Arch Over The Road, Buildings On Both Sides, Utility Poles And A Few Early Cars.

A big “WELCOME” arch spans the street in this early view of downtown Munising, Michigan, with wooden sidewalks, brick storefronts and a few cars parked along the curb.

We think this shot was taken around 1910, and the photo sure feels like that era — but the exact year and the reason for the arch (festival? booster campaign? visitors arriving by road or rail?) aren’t confirmed from the image alone. A postcard catalog of Munising views even lists a “Welcome Home Arch,” suggesting arches like this were a known local landmark at one point.

Do you know where this arch stood in Munising — and what event or moment it was built for?
