Passengers Embark to Resorts by Boat from Lakeland Michigan Depot c1900

A Large Crowd Gathers Beside A Lakeside Depot Labeled “Lakeland” While Several Small Boats Wait At Wooden Docks In The Foreground.

Passengers crowd the Lakeland, Mich., depot shoreline as small boats pull in to carry them out to lakeside resorts, circa 1900. The depot sign reads “LAKELAND,” and the scene feels like a handoff — train travel to the water, then a quick ride to cottages, hotels and day-trip spots.

Lakeland sat on Zukey Lake in Livingston County, part of the Huron River Chain of Lakes, where trains helped turn summer boating into a routine weekend escape before cars took over.

Do you recognize the resort docks, the depot, or family stories about arriving by rail and leaving by boat?
