US Coast Guard Station Grand Mariais Michigan c1940

A Black-And-White Postcard Photo Of A Large White Coast Guard Station Building With A Watchtower And A Tall Radio Mast On Open Ground.

This real-photo postcard shows the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Grand Marais, Michigan, with its watchtower and a tall radio mast rising beside the main building. The scene looks newly kept-up — bare ground, young trees, and a wide-open shoreline setting on Lake Superior’s south coast.

Grand Marais has long been a key safe-harbor spot for ships working the Pictured Rocks stretch. The National Park Service notes Coast Guard families lived at the Grand Marais Harbor of Refuge property until the station closed in 1981, and the site later transferred to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Do you remember the Coast Guard presence in Grand Marais — or have stories from this station?
