Unexploded Dynamite Found in Ruins – Bath School Explosion – May 18, 1927

Black-And-White Photo Of A Crouching Helmeted Man Beside Buckets Of Dynamite Sticks, Surrounded By A Crowd Of Men.

A helmeted man crouches beside buckets filled with dynamite sticks as onlookers crowd in — a stark reminder that the danger in Bath wasn’t over when the first blast hit.

The text written on this image reads, “Unexploded dynamite found in ruins of Bath school … Photo by L. Waldron … May 18 ’27 … Grand Ledge, Mich.” In the aftermath of the May 18, 1927, bombing at Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township, searchers and investigators found additional explosives that had not detonated, forcing rescue work to pause while the devices were dealt with.

The attack was planned by school board treasurer Andrew Kehoe and remains the deadliest assault on a U.S. school, with modern summaries commonly reporting 45 dead (including Kehoe) and 58 injured.

What details have you heard about the unexploded bombs found at Bath?
