A crowd gathers in front of the shattered Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township after the May 18, 1927, bombing.
This real-photo postcard-style image includes a handwritten-style caption across the bottom: “School where 44 were killed and 43 injured … Bath, Mich., May 18th, 1927 … Photo by L.A. Waldron … Grand Ledge.” Early casualty counts often shifted as names were confirmed. Modern summaries commonly cite 45 deaths (including the bomber) and 58 injured.
The attack was carried out by school board treasurer Andrew Kehoe, who planted explosives beneath the school and detonated them during the school day — the deadliest attack on a U.S. school.
