by Belleville’s “White Mill” sits along the Huron River in this early-1900s scene, with teams of horses and wagons lined up at the loading platform. Local histories say James Coomer built a dam here in 1900 and operated a flouring mill, sometimes called the “Ford Mill” after an earlier owner, C.M. Ford. The dam reportedly created a pond of about 25 acres and was said to provide about 400 horsepower. The mill’s run was brief — it burned in 1911, and a replacement grist mill also burned. A spring flood in 1915 later destroyed the dam.
