Bridge St. – Govt. Indian School – Mt. Pleasant Mich.

Children Stand Along A Railing Above A Stone Bridge, With School Buildings In The Background.

“Bridge St. — Gov’t. Indian School — Mt. Pleasant, Mich.”

Children stand along a stone bridge in a photograph labeled as the government Indian school in Mount Pleasant. Their names and the date of the photograph are unknown.

The Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School operated from 1893 to 1934. It was part of a federal system that sought to assimilate Native children by separating them from their families, languages and cultures. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe continues to document the school’s history and honor the children who attended it.
