Old Mission Point and Yachts In Harbor And State Docks on Mackinac Island c1900

Sepia-Toned Harbor Scene With Many Sailboats On The Water And A Shoreline Neighborhood With A Church Steeple In The Distance.

Sailboats crowd the calm water off Old Mission Point on Mackinac Island in this early harbor view. The shoreline at left leads toward Mission Point — named for a Protestant mission that operated on the island from 1823 to 1837. Mackinac State Historic Parks notes that Mission Point included the Mission House and Mission Church, anchors of that early settlement before the island’s big resort era took off.

The photo also highlights how important the harbor has always been. Today’s Mackinac Island harbor is in Haldimand Bay, where ferries and recreational boats still share tight quarters in summer.

Do you recognize this viewpoint — or have a family photo from the state dock or Mission Point?
