John Jacob Aster House on Mackinac Island

Black-And-White Photo Of A Long, Two-Story Wooden Building With A Covered Porch And A Sign Reading “John Jacob Astor House” Along A Street With Utility Poles.

This long, wood-frame building with the wraparound porch is the John Jacob Astor House on Mackinac Island — a name tied to the island’s fur-trade past and its rise as a resort destination. The Astor House was created in 1871, when businessman James F. Cable purchased former American Fur Company buildings on Market Street and combined them into what became the island’s premier hotel for years. It stayed a social hub until the Grand Hotel opened in 1887, and the Astor House continued operating as a hotel until 1929. Today, part of the old complex is preserved as the Stuart House City Museum.

What do you know or remember about the Astor House — or staying near Market Street on Mackinac?
