Roscommon Mill Near the Railway Bridge

Five Young People Stand On Timbers Among Floating Logs, With A Large Mill, Tall Smokestacks And Piles Of Logs Across The Water.

Roscommon Mill Near the Railway Bridge

Logs crowd the water below a Roscommon mill as five young people pose on timbers in the foreground. Tall smokestacks rise above the buildings, and more logs cover the bank at right.

Roscommon’s growth depended on the meeting of lumbering, river transportation and the railroad. The village developed where the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Railroad crossed the South Branch of the Au Sable River.

This undated photograph shows the scale of that industrial activity. Look closely at the inclined conveyor leading toward the mill and the timber structures holding floating logs together.
