Domestic Terror – Bath School Explosion – May 18, 1927

Black-And-White Photo Of Men Standing On Piles Of Lumber And Bricks Beside The Blown-Out Remains Of A Large Building After An Explosion.

Men stand on the rubble of the Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township, Michigan, after the May 18, 1927, bombing.

That morning, school board treasurer Andrew Kehoe set off explosives he had planted beneath the building. The attack and related blasts killed at least 44 people; the death toll is commonly listed as 45, including the bomber, with 58 injured.

Bath is still remembered as the deadliest attack on a U.S. school. The handwritten note on this print (“Killed 46”) shows how confusing and fast-changing the early reports were.

What have you heard — or what do you know — about the Bath School disaster and how it shaped the community?
