The Lure Of Iargo Springs
One of the highlights along this route is the Iargo Springs Interpretive Site, which boasts the only “waterfall” on the sunrise side of lower Michigan. Visitors must descend 300 stairs from the top of the springs to the Au Sable River below to reach the falls. It’s important to keep in mind that what goes down must also come back up unless you plan on staying overnight. Despite the physical challenge, the experience is well worth it.
After descending the 300 stairs (even on the way down), the breathtaking views will leave you in awe. The surroundings are peaceful and calming, with informative placards along the way narrating the history of the Springs and highlighting the fascinating features of this Huron National Forest location. Take your time and enjoy the shaded forest area at your leisure, as the thought of the uphill climb will make you yearn for the tranquil setting.

The Riverview Camp Ground and Canoe Livery offer Rifle River trips ranging from 1-1/2 hours to three days. The Rifle River Recreation Area near Lupton is rich with clear water flowing through pools and riffles and is designated Michigan Wild Scenic Natural River.
In Omer, you can get on the river in no time at the Russell Canoe Livery. Discover the beauty and adventure of The Rifle, Michigan’s beloved “fun river”. This natural wonder provides opportunities for canoeing, drifting, kayaking, rafting, tubing, and camping. As you begin your journey, you’ll feel transported to a simpler time, surrounded by serene wilderness and stunning scenery. The gentle current of the Rifle River makes it easy to immerse yourself in nature. To avoid crowds, we recommend planning your visit on any day except for Saturdays in late June, July, and August.
Pointe Au Gres Nature Lookout
This is the site of a famous battle between Native American tribes. The Sauk Tribe was highly protective of this region due to the vast amount of game and fish, including Sturgeon. The sturgeon was said to be so numerous that boys would walk across them looking for an ideal fish to harvest.
Local legend has it that a brutal conflict occurred between 1638 and 1640, resulting in the near destruction of the Sauk Tribe. As the story goes, the Ojibwe inhabited the northlands of Saginaw Bay, and their harsher climate made survival more challenging than for the Sauk who lived in Saginaw Valley. The Ojibwe joined forces with the Ottawa, who lived south of the Sauk and launched a series of attacks that almost wiped out the Sauk people.
Today this area hosts a fabulous nature lookout. Lake views plus the long boardwalk out into the reserve oast astounding amounts of cattails for natural habitat, including the red-winged blackbirds. It is a chance to visit a forgotten attraction in the AuGres area.
