U.S. Indian School Mt. Pleasant Mich.

Several Multistory Brick Buildings With Pitched Roofs Stand Beyond A Lawn And Shrubs, With A Small Tower Above The Building Near The Center-Right.

U.S. Indian School, Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Brick buildings stretch across the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School campus in this undated photograph bearing the credit “Pratt Photo.”

The school operated from 1893 to 1934. According to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, students were prohibited from speaking their Native languages and practicing their cultures and spirituality. Laundry, farm work, cleaning and other manual labor occupied much of the school day, alongside basic academic instruction.

This campus view records the institution’s buildings. Understanding what happened inside them also requires the accounts of former students and their families.
