Indian Industrial School Mt Pleasant Mich

Brick Buildings Stand Behind A Wide Lawn, With Two Small Figures Near A Doorway At Left And A Flagpole At Right.

Indian Industrial School, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

Several brick buildings stand beyond a broad lawn in this undated photograph labeled “Indian Industrial School, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.” Two people are visible near the entrance of the building at left. Their identities are unknown.

The Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School operated from 1893 to 1934. It was part of a federal system designed to assimilate Native children. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe now leads work to document the site and remember the children who attended. The buildings in this photograph should be understood in that history, though their individual uses have not been confirmed from the image.
