Hospital Govt. Indian School Mt. Pleasant Mich.

Four People Stand On A Stone Bridge Beside A Two-Story Brick Building, With “Hospital — Gov’t. Indian School — Mt. Pleasant, Mich.” Written On The Photograph.

Hospital — Gov’t. Indian School — Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

Four people stand on a stone bridge outside a brick building labeled as the hospital at the Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School. The photograph does not identify them or give a date.

The federal school operated from 1893 to 1934. It was part of a boarding school system intended to assimilate Native children. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe continues to document the school and the experiences of those who attended it. The hospital label tells us the building’s stated purpose, but this image alone tells us nothing about the care children received there.
