Courthouse and Jail – Roscommon Michigan – c1940

Black-And-White Photo Of Two White Wooden Buildings Labeled “Court House And Jail” In Roscommon, Michigan, With Tall Pine Trees And A Dirt Road In The Foreground.

Two wood-frame buildings — the courthouse (left) and jail (right) — sit behind a dirt road in this labeled photo from Roscommon, Michigan, dated c. 1940.

Roscommon County has been administered out of more than one courthouse over the years. One courthouse-history compilation notes that the county seat moved to the village of Roscommon in 1879, when a two-story wooden courthouse was built there — the kind of building this photo appears to show. By the mid-1960s, the county was using a newer courthouse building.

What do you know or remember about the old courthouse and jail in Roscommon — or about where they stood?
